It was around 1897 that the classic snapping mouse trap was invented. Since then there have been many attempts to make a better mouse trap. Many have tried to make a better way to eliminate mice and similar rodents, but they have all in one way or another fallen short – or have they? What are the pros and cons to each type of mouse trap and what is the best mouse trap?

In 1897 James Henry Atkinson invented the first snap trap. He appropriately named it the “Little Nipper” and one can only speculate that he called it this because when a mouse tries to steal the bait the metal arm snaps down to ‘nip’ the mouse.

Today this style of mouse trap is still the most widely sold. They are pretty effective with statistics boasting a 35% kill rate. The cons however are quite substantial. Even with the snap trap being the most widely sold it leaves a lot to be desired of.

Loading a snap trap is hazardous. They snap easily and it takes a few tries to get them set. Sometimes even after a snap trap is set it will snap once set down on the floor or other strategic trap placement. They maim often. If the trap is killing 35% of the time the other 65% of the time is often leaving a mouse scurrying away injured and in pain. The last real con to the traditional snap trap is that once it does catch a mouse it is often thrown away with the mouse still attached causing unnecessary waste. Over all the traditional snap trap is far from the best mouse trap available.

It wasn’t for about another 60 years that a strong mouse control solution was introduced. In 1962 the JT Eaton Company introduced the poison block. The idea behind poising the mice is that a mouse can eat the poison and die. There are significant cons to poisons and frankly these cons take them way out of the running of being the best mouse trap.

First of all it can take a mouse an average of 48 hours to die and as much as weeks after eating mouse poison. It is a slow and painful death. Mice usually live in an area about 40 feet from their nests. This means that if a mouse is spotted inside of a house that it is extremely likely their nest is very close. If the nest has not been found by the mouse trapper then it is well hidden. What this means in relation to poisons is that after a mouse eats poison it goes off to die in its nest and the nest is a well hidden place likely inside the house. After the mouse eats the poison it will slowly and painfully scurry off to its nest to die and rot inside the house. This method of mouse trap is far from the best mouse trap considering the associated cons.

This time it was mere 14 years before the next mouse trap came out. The next major development in modern day rodent control was the invention of the glue board, developed by JT Eaton Company in 1979. The glue board is currently under as much scrutiny as poison and in many western countries has been prohibited for sale.

Although effective the glue board mouse trap is extremely cruel to the rodent and as a result the glue board trap is not the best mouse trap. In short, the mouse will walk onto the trap to get bait and will become stuck to the trap. The mouse is then left to die a slow and painful death where they will often attempt to chew off their own limbs in order to escape. Glue traps do not even factor in the competition for best mouse trap as they are far too cruel.

Since 1990 several plastic snap traps have entered the market, although somewhat easier to operate than the traditional wooden / wire traps they fundamentally function in the same way as the 100 year old invention of James Atkinson. These new designs have not managed to overcome the inherit problems associated with snap traps, such as misfires and bait steels, blood and mess and in the case of rat traps dangerous to children and non target species. For these reasons they like their wooden predecessor might sell many units but remain far from the best mouse trap.

It wasn’t until 2007 that a truly new mouse trap was invented. It was this year that David Wells and Luc Desbonnets of New Zealand released their revolutionary mouse ring trap invention called the NOOSKI. This mouse trap appears to have shown the first signs of being the best mouse trap, now, and judging from the history, ever.

The way that the Nooski mouse trap works is that it is powered by a small rubber ring. The mouse enters the trap to get the bait, which is cleverly situated so that it is impossible to steal. As the mouse approaches the bait the ring is set off around the mouse’s neck causing near instant suffocation and death. The Nooski trap is 100% effective as there have never been reported misses and maiming.

When compared to other mouse traps the Nooski mouse trap comes out as the best mouse trap. Nooskl does not maim, Nooski does not torture with a slow death, Nooski is totally reusable therefore causing no waste and it works every time. When comparing the other mouse traps on the market it appears that the Nooski mouse trap is the best mouse trap ever invented.

With the current state of the economy as well as the environment, many people are making changes to curb cost and help with pollution. New parents are no exception. There are many products that can help give you piece of mind when it comes to these new issues. One of these products is the cloth diaper.

There are many different types of cloth diapering systems, all with their own benefits, but there is one diapering system that wins hands down when it comes to ease of use, cost effectiveness, and environmental friendliness. The two-part pre-fold is the most well-rounded cloth diaper system. However, here is a list of each of the cloth diapering systems and each of their benefits and downfalls.

The pocket cloth diaper is designed for ease of use. The cloth is stuffed inside of the diaper beforehand and can be put onto the child in a matter of seconds. The downside to this diaper is that the entire diaper becomes dirty with one soiling. This means that you cannot just remove the diaper from the pocket because the pocket also becomes wet. You will need a lot of this type of diaper to keep up with your child’s wetting cycle.

The all in one cloth diaper is 2 things a diaper and a wrap in one. This type is much like the pocket design except that the diaper has no pocket but comes pre stuffed. Like the pocket design they are easy to use and go on very quick. This also has the same down falls as the pocket style diaper in that you will need to fully wash each diaper after each soiling. This means you will need a lot of diapers and a lot of time to wash them.

The one-size fits all cloth diaper is designed to be the last diaper you will ever need. They are usually in the style of the all in one or the pocket cloth diaper but have a great deal of adjustment to fit your child from newborn to toddler. The major downfall of this product is that there is simply no way that a diaper can be one size fits all. Not just purely in size but the amount of liquid a newborn produces is far less than that of a toddler.

The last and aforementioned form of cloth diapers is clearly far superior, the two part pre-fold system made popular by Real Nappies. With this system the cloth diaper is separate from the cover. This way the inside cloth is the only thing that’s affected by the wetting of the diaper. All you have to do is remove the cloth and put in a new one. This means you will need less supplies and less time in the washroom.

Another great benefit is that each cover is a different size for a different stage in the child’s growth. With this you are ensured a perfect fit from infant to toddler. So as research will show the system popularized by Real Nappies is the best overall option when you look at all aspects cost, ease of use, and eco-friendliness. To top it off Real Nappies offers a two child guarantee. So your cloth diaper system will last and last or you’ll get replacements!

The first thing on any parents mind with the birth of there new child is always safety. Whether it be during normal day-to-day happenings or most importantly the night hours when the child is left unattended, it is up to the parents to make sure that during the night hours there child is comfortable and safe in their “nest”.

There is a fabric and bedding method that can eliminate some of the concerns about your child’s safety. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is something on the minds of most new parents and cases still exist where there is no explanation for the death, but some causes are known. There are now studies revealing that 25% of babies are found with blankets over there faces. The baby sleep sack is a solution to this problem and almost completely eliminates the chance of the baby’s face getting covered when it moves around during sleep. A blanket covering a baby’s face not only contributes to suffocation but also overheating.

It can take a newborn child up to a year to develop the ability regulate their own body temperature. This being the case over heating is one of the suspected culprits in causing SIDS. Small fluctuations in heat can have a drastic effect on the body temperature of a newborn. The best way to help control the temperature of your child at night is using merino wool products. Merino has a natural ability to regulate body temperature by capturing and circulating air to insulate you child when the room temperature drops, and most importantly in relation to SIDS, merino wool releases excess heat and wicks away body moisture when the room temperature rises.

The best bet for sleep attire for you child is the combination of both the baby sleep bag and merino wool fabric. The combination of the merino wool and the sleep bag will eliminate some of the risks associated with SIDS. Knowing your child is comfortable is the piece of mind parents need to sleep well through the night.

The Merino Kids Baby Sleep Bag will ensure confidence in parents minds that there child is safe. Merino Kids have designed their baby sleep bags with comfort in mind. Using the finest and softest merino wool interior and soft durable cotton exterior it can guarantee your baby a good night sleep and with its benefits in relation to the prevention of SIDS can also provide parents with much needed sleep during the night. Available through: babysleepbags.com for the USA and babysleepbags.co.uk.

When a new child is first brought home from the hospital there are many concerns on the new parents mind. One of the biggest concerns is making sure that the baby is comfortable in its new environment, and the most important part of this environment is the baby’s bedding during the night hours when the child is unsupervised. On average a newborn can sleep up-to 18 hours everyday. There is a form of functional bedding that can reduce some of the concerns about keeping the baby safe during the all important night hours.

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) can weigh heavily on the mind of any new parent. Cases still remain where there is no explanation for the death, yet some causes are known. One recent study shows 25% of babies are found with blankets covering their faces. A sleep sack will almost entirely eliminate the chance that the child’s face will be covered while moving around during sleep. Blankets covering a child’s face cannot only contribute to suffocation but also to overheating.

One of the many known culprits in SIDS cases is overheating. A newborn child can take up to a year to develop the ability to control its own body temperature so small fluctuations in heat can have a huge effect on the child’s core body temperature and the baby can either wake up cold or even worse get over heated and risk SIDS. The best bet for helping a child control its body temperature is putting it to sleep wearing merino. Merino has a natural ability to not only capture and circulate heat to insulate the baby’s body, but also release excess heat and wick moisture from the body when temperatures rise.

The best combination to prevent suffocation and over heating is a merino fabric baby sleep sack. The merino sleep sack will reduce some of the risks associated with SIDS. In most cases this is the piece of mind parents need when putting their children down to sleep.

Merino Kids Baby Sleep Bag will provide assurance for parents that their baby will be safe through the night. Merino Kids has designed their sleep bags with comfort in functionality in mind.

The first thing on any parents mind with the birth of a new child is always safety. Whether it is during day-to-day happenings or the most important night time when the child is left unattended for hours on end, safety comes to mind first. It is up to the parents to make sure that during the night their child is comfortable and safe in their “nest”.There is a fabric and bedding method that can eliminate some of the concerns about a child’s safety. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is something on the minds of most new parents and cases still exist. Although there is no explanation for some deaths some causes are known.

There are now studies revealing that 25% of babies are found with blankets over their faces. Using a baby sleep sack instead of a loose blanket is a solution to this problem and almost completely eliminates the chance of the baby’s face getting covered when it moves around during sleep. A blanket covering a baby’s face not only contributes to suffocation but also overheating.

It can take a newborn child up to a year to develop the ability regulate their own body temperature. This being the case, over heating is one of the suspected culprits in causing SIDS. Small fluctuations in heat can have a drastic effect on the body temperature of a newborn. The best way to help control the temperature of your child at night is using merino fabrics. Merino has a natural ability to regulate body temperature by capturing and circulating air to insulate the child when the room temperature drops, and most importantly in relation to SIDS, merino wool releases excess heat and wicks away body moisture when the room temperature rises.

The best bet for safe sleep attire for a child is the combination of both the baby sleep bag and merino wool fabric. The combination of the merino wool and the sleep bag will eliminate some of the risks associated with SIDS. Knowing your child is comfortable and safer is the piece of mind parents needs to sleep well through the night.

The Merino Kids Baby Sleep Bag will ensure confidence in the parent’s mind that their child is safe. Merino Kids have designed their baby sleep sack with comfort in mind. Using the finest and softest merino. wool interior and soft durable cotton exterior it can guarantee your baby a good night sleep and with its benefits in relation to the prevention of SIDS can also provide parents with much needed piece of mind during the night.

With the Real Nappies Birth-to-Potty Pack, parents don’t need to be a cloth diaper expert to know what to buy, and they won’t need to buy more diapers as their baby grows. They get everything they need in a single economical box; more than 100 items including cloth diapers, diaper covers, diaper liners, diaper sanitizer, swim wrap and potty training pants.

“Real Nappies cloth diapers are perfect for busy parents who want to do what’s right for the environment and their baby by using cloth diapers but don’t want mess and fuss,” said Liz Mole, founder of Real Nappies. “As a busy working mom of two young children, I know the pressure of daily demands and the need for convenience. Our Birth-to-Potty Pack is designed to make cloth diapers easy.” [placeholder]

Why Should You Use Cloth Diapers?

Author: Duncan Gelby

So many parents today mistakenly believe that disposable diapers are the best, indeed the only, diapering choice for their baby. But, not too long ago cloth diapers were the only option. Parents used them with no problem. Here is a look at why cloth diapers are a better choice than disposable diapers.

Disposable diapers have chemicals in them. They are treated to make them super absorbent, but these chemicals against your baby’s skin 24 hours a day for the first two and a half years of their life cannot be good. cloth diapers are made of fabric that is not treated with chemicals that could be harmful. This makes them a healthier choice.

Cloth diapers are a more economical choice in the long run. If you invest in quality cloth diapers and use them properly, they can last you through several children. Over one child’s lifetime it costs an estimated $2,000 to keep them in disposable diapers. Reusable cloth diapers can cost as little as $400-$500 including washings. Although the upfront cost is more, the overall cost is much less.

Cloth diapers cause a lot fewer diaper rashes. Because parents who use cloth diapers change their baby much more often, there is less chance for bacteria to build up. This results in fewer painful diaper rashes, and much happier babies.

Cloth diapers are much better for the environment. Millions upon millions of disposable diaper are dumped in landfills each year. The repercussions of this will be felt for generations to come. Cloth diapers can be washed and reused many times. Even after it’s life as a diaper, it can be used for other things like dust rags or burp clothes.

Some people argue that cloth diapers are not effectively better than disposables for the environment due to repeated washings. First, the water that is used to wash the diapers can be recycled for other uses. The cost in terms of electricity to wash and dry them is much less than the cost to build new and bigger landfills.

If you don’t want to bother with washing them, you can get a diaper service that delivers clean diapers to your door every week. You simply send the dirty ones back with them and they wash them for you. You don’t even have to use pins anymore. The new diaper covers hold them in place for you. This is cloth diapering at it’s most convenient.

Cloth diapers are so much cuter than disposables. You can get cloth diapers and diaper covers in any fabric pattern that you so desire. There are so many out there to choose from, that even the pickiest parent can find a great look. This way your baby can be well dressed right down to his or her diaper.

There are so many great things about cloth diapering, it’s hard to get them all in. From the cost to the environmental factors, cloth diapers really are the way to go. If you still don’t believe me check it out for yourself. There is lots of great information out there.

Many parents also report that their child is potty trained sooner than average when they have used cloth diapers. Perhaps it is because parents who use cloth diapers change them more often so the learns to recognize when they are wet.

Many parents are realizing the benefits of cloth diapers. This great economical solution to diapering your baby is coming back into fashion as more and more people are choosing it.

Not Your Grandmother’s Way to Cloth Diaper

Author: Rachel Martin

It is extremely likely that your Grandma used cloth diapers to diaper her children. You may have even heard some of the stories of washing, drying, messes and pinning. Today’s diapers are so different. For starters there are the many different kinds. But that isn’t the only thing. There no longer has to be pinning. No sticking your finger or your baby. Don’t get me wrong some mom’s still like to use pins and are very good at it. Personally I’m not good at pinning and so I’m really excited about the changes in ways to keep the diaper all together.

For starters there are Velcro like tabs. These tabs are often called hook and loop closures in the cloth diapering world. They are the closures that are most like using disposables. They are the fastest and arguably the easiest closures to have. There is a downside to them though. Over time, they can wear out. They can get frayed and loose their grip. The other downside is that older babies and toddlers can easily undo them. Soon you have a little one streaking through your living room.

Another type of closure are snaps. Snaps are the top choice for many moms because they are not easily undone by toddlers. They are an easy and efficient way to close up the diaper. They don’t wear out like the hook and look closures either. The downside to snaps is that they do not allow for fit options that hook and loop allows. There are certain places for the snaps, and that is where they stay. The hook and loop allows for some options in fit.

The option that is used for prefold diapers is a snappi. The snappi replaces pins. The snappi is a three armed device. On the end of each arm are teeth that grab hold of the cloth diapers. No poking, no stabbing, just grabbing. They are a great alternative to pins.

Each type of closure has it’s own benefits and downsides. Try each one for yourself and find the right fit for you and your baby.

Author: David Cummings

“Going green” seems to be the mantra of today’s society. We are being more frugal with energy, cutting down on waste, and reusing whatever we can. When you add a new baby to your life, you suddenly realize that being “green” is not going to be as easy as you might wish. Babies come with lots of “stuff,” and that stuff creates lots of waste. If you want to be a green parent, one thing you might be considering is cloth diapering. Before you make the investment into cloth diapers, read the pros and cons of this diapering option.

Pros of Cloth Diapering

Cloth diapers are less harmful to the environment, because they create less waste. Disposable diapers never break down completely, so every time you throw away a disposable diaper, you are adding something to the landfills that will always be there. There is no waste materials to add to landfills with a cloth diaper.

Using cloth diapers can actually save you money. You can limit your monetary investment into cloth diapers by purchasing a brand which has a one size fits all sizing scheme. Parents who use disposable diapers tend to run out at the worst times and need to run to the store to get additional supplies. You do not have to run to the store to get clean diapers, just your laundry room.

Some parents notice their children show an interest in potty training earlier when using cloth diapers. Disposable diapers do a great job of keeping wetness away from the skin, but this can make potty training difficult. The child does not feel “wet” when the diaper is wet, so learning when it is time to go is hard. With cloth diapers, the child feels wetness on his skin when the diaper is wet, which can push him towards potty training early.

Cons of Cloth Diapers

Cloth diapers can cost a bundle to purchase initially. There are many different vendors, and you can even buy the diapers and covers used, but some of the best diapers cost as much as $300 to $500 to get a beginning set. This can cause many parents to turn away, even though they will spend much more than that over their child’s lifetime if they are buying disposables time and time again.

While cloth diapers do keep the landfills more clear, they are not completely environmentally friendly as might be thought. It does take a bit more energy to wash and dry these diapers. They have to be washed in hot water, which takes a lot of energy. This also adds to the cost factor, as it increases your utility bills.

Some parents find cloth diapers difficult to manage while out in public. Transporting soiled cloth diapers can be daunting, but there are products which can be used to help parents with this task. It is particularly difficult to manage while traveling when you may not have access to a washing machine. Don’t forget the good news! You can use disposables during those infrequent times you do not have access to a washing machine or dryer and still use cloth the majority of the time if you want.

So are cloth diapers for you? It is up to you to decide. Before you decide, do some research into the cleaning and care of cloth diapers to help you determine whether or not you might enjoy clothe diapering. If you feel like you can manage it, then you can do your part to help protect the environment by diapering your baby with cloth.

Advantages of Cloth Diapering

Author: Heather Ledeboer

Welcome to the wonderful world of easy-to-use modern cloth diapers. Look at the many advantages cloth diapers have to offer:

USE CLOTH DIAPERS AND SAVE OVER $1000! On average, you will spend $2000 on disposable diapers per child. Compare that to an average of $700 (that includes laundering expenses) for your first child’s diapering years using cloth diapers. A second and third child will cost much less, as many of the diapers can be re-used. Depending on the diaper system you use you can spend a little less or more than the above mentioned amount for your first child.

USE CLOTH DIAPERS AND REDUCE DIAPER RASH! Diaper rash is seldom a problem when using cloth diapers. Cloth diapers are more breathable and cloth diapered babies are changed more often, as the diaper starts feeling damp after (on average) 4 hours. Disposable diapers mask the wetness, therefore child care providers and parents have no indication of how long the child has been wearing a wet or poopy diaper. This, together with the fact that disposable diapers become much hotter, allows more rapid bacterial growth which can cause diaper rash. If your baby has sensitive skin the reaction to the chemicals in disposable diapers may also contribute to diaper rash.

CLOTH DIAPERS ARE FAST AND EASY TO USE – UNIQUE FASTENER/LINER SYSTEM! The new styles of cloth diapers now available are as easy to use as a disposable. The added effort of doing two additional loads of laundry per week is worth the many benefits for your child, your pocketbook and the environment.

CLOTH DIAPERS ARE COOL & COMFORTABLE FOR BABY! Cloth diapers are soft and comfortable made of natural, chemical free, very absorbent fibers. Most diapers are made of cotton. Sometimes hemp is used. Unlike disposable diapers, cloth diapers stay cool even on the hottest summer day.

POTTY TRAINING IS EASIER WITH CLOTH DIAPERS! On average cloth diapered children potty train 6 months earlier than children wearing disposable diapers. Cloth diapers do not mask the sensation of wetness.

CLOTH DIAPERING FITS ANY LIFESTYLE! Cloth diapering easily adapts to fit even the busiest lifestyle or any full time daycare situation.

CLOTH DIAPERS ARE THE HEALTHY ALTERNATIVE – SAFER FOR NEW DELICATE SKIN! Cloth diapers don’t contain any of the harmful chemicals that disposables are loaded with. See “how dangerous are disposable diapers”.

How Dangerous Are Disposables?

Your child will spend the first 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 years of his or her life in diapers. Disposable diapers are an easy way of diapering, but are the possible health hazards these diapers pose worth the simplicity?

MALE INFERTILITY Disposable diapers could be the cause of the sharp rise in male infertility over the past 25 years. It is thought that disposable diapers heat up boys testicles to such a degree that it stop them from developing normal.

SODIUM POLYACRYLATE, which is linked to Toxic Shock Syndrome and can therefore no longer be used in tampons, is the super absorbent gel in disposable diapers. You can find the little “gel balls” on the skin of your baby’s bottom. It is interesting to note that employees in factories manufacturing sodium polyacrylate suffer from female organ problems, slow healing wounds, fatigue and weight loss.

TBT (TRIBULYTIN) In May 2000 Greenpeace found TBT in Pampers® Baby Dry in Germany. TBT is one of the most toxic substances ever made. It harms the immune system and impairs the hormonal system. There is speculation that it could cause boys to become sterile.

DIOXIN Traces of the carcinogen Dioxin have been found in disposable diapers. Dioxin causes liver disease, immune system suppression and genetic damage. It is a byproduct of bleaching with chlorine gas and is banned in most countries. Unfortunately, the USA still allows it.

ASTHMA In 1998 a study showed that childhood respiratory problems, including asthma, might be linked to inhaling the mixture of chemicals emitted from disposable diapers.

UTI INFECTIONS IN BABY GIRLS also seem on the rise with an increased use of disposable diapers.

BABIES POORLY DEVELOPED OUTER SKIN LAYER ABSORBS ABOUT 48 CHEMICALS if you use disposable diapers & wipes and standard baby products. This can be greatly reduced by using cloth diapers and natural baby products.

Every child adds a minimum of 6500 disposable diapers (30% of which is non biodegradable) to our landfills. Included in the soiled diapers are many of pounds of raw fecal matter. Viruses found in the feces can pose a threat to our water supplies and wild life, by seeping through cracks that sometimes develop in landfills.

The manufacturing of disposable diapers poses another threat to our environment, requiring large quantities of wood pulp (trees) and dangerous complex chemical substances, which leave behind many harmful byproducts.

Compare all that to the resources used to make and clean three to five dozen cloth diapers with no raw fecal matter!)
